About the Item
A bronze sculpture by Prodosh Das Gupta.
Prodosh Das Gupta was born in Barakar, Dhaka, in 1912. After graduating from Calcutta University, he attended the Government College of Art and Craft, Chennai, and the Lucknow School of Arts and Crafts. He was awarded a fellowship to pursue further studies at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and the Ecole de Grand Chaumier in Paris, where he honed his sculpture and bronze-casting skills. In 1940 he returned to India and set up his studio in Calcutta.
Das Gupta was a crucial figure in mid-century modernism and pioneered semi-abstract, three-dimensional figuration. He and a group of fellow artists founded the Calcutta Group to break away from the conventional style of art taught at the time and move towards a more global aesthetic, one that would enable them to express through their work the harsh social realities of the country in which they lived.
In 1956, Das Gupta won the National Award for his sculpture Goddess. He also received the President's award for his outstanding contribution to the world of art. He died in 1991.
