About the Item

A rare and visually striking mid-20th century Zsolnay modernist porcelain sculpture, designed by celebrated Hungarian artist János Török. This sculptural form beautifully exemplifies the biomorphic language of post-war modernism, echoing the abstracted, flowing rhythms associated with artists such as Henry Moore. The piece features two interlocking figures formed from sweeping continuous curves, creating an elegant sense of movement and harmony. At approximately 10 inches (25.5 cm) wide and 7.5 inches (19 cm) high, this is a substantial example of Török’s work. Its generous scale and dynamic pierced structure set it apart from the miniature, more commonly encountered versions of Zsolnay’s modernist designs. The sculpture is finished in a luminous translucent eosin glaze, displaying the signature iridescent shifts of gold, green, and turquoise for which Zsolnay became internationally renowned during the mid-century period. It remains in excellent condition, with no damage or restoration; however, this example does not bear a factory mark, something not uncommon among certain Zsolnay studio productions of the early 1960s. Designer Note János Török (1932–1996) joined the Zsolnay Factory in Pécs in 1956 and went on to create some of the company’s most iconic modernist sculptures. From the late 1950s onward, he developed a series of abstracted figurative works characterised by refined silhouettes, fluid contours, and a distinctly sculptural sensibility. His designs from this period are instantly recognisable and remain highly sought after by collectors of mid-century European ceramics.
