About the Item
A rare and very special statue known as "The Zodiac" by Lars Bergsten for Upsala Ekeby, Sweden, 1960s. This is a very unusual piece depicting a mans face in an abstract or graphic way, mounted on a piece of wood. Mr. Bergsten has always a very distinct design and most of his work was studio productions, this was commissioned by the prestigious Upsala Ekeby to be a part of their range with a limited production. The colour of the glazing is a dark brown with hits of green and in a very good condition. It is 21.5cm (8.46") with the stand and around 15cm (5.90") in diameter. The price includes free shipping.
Upsala-Ekeby keramik Ltd. was established on 29 January 1886, in Sweden. Uppsala began with the production of bricks and tiles and other pottery objects. In the 1910s, the company began hiring artists. Among the first designers was Anna-Lisa Thomson and Sven Erik Skawonius, who was leading figures for the growing style now known as modern Scandinavian design. The company’s ceramic manufacturing began in the 1960s in response to growing sales of both tableware, vases and other object used for interior design as well as art ceramics. The company now hired some of their best-known artists and designers such as Hjördis Oldfors, Mari Simmulson, Arthur Percy, Olle Alberius, Carl Malmsten, Vicke Lindstrand, and Ingrid Atterberg to name a few, who has produced so many retro and vintage classics from the 1960s and 70s. The factories closed in 1980.
