About the Item

19th century, or possibly earlier, seated bronze chimera, cast as a ferocious scaled beast seated in a defensive crouch with its head facing forward as it opens its mouth in a roar exposing the tongue, and the ears shown among backswept horns. The chimera seated on an integral base. A wonderful small sculpture that exudes a lot of presence. A very appealing warm, coppery patina. Guardian figures and mythical beasts, like the seated creature here, intended to safeguard the home, were often depicted with fierce features designed to intimidate. 8.75 inches high 3.5 wide 4 deep
