About the Item
This superb mid 19th century very large classical Roman Medici lion is beautifully detailed and cast in solid plaster, which is hand finished with a bronze-like patina.
The lion is securely mounted onto a stepped white and black well-figured marble plinth.
This large and decorative piece was intentionally made to give the appearance of a much more expensive bronze sculpture.
It would have been displayed in a large country house amongst other fine pieces, where few people would question its material. This rare survivor now offers a similar opportunity to own an antique 19th-century, very large, impressive classical sculpture at a fraction of the cost of a bronze example, still giving a highly decorative display.
