About the Item

Early Bayol Carousel Galloper. From the famous workshop of Bayol, 215 bis Rue de Paris (now Pasteur), Angers. This is an original first period (1895-1909) galloper sculpted by Bayol himself in lime from Chateaubriand. It is characterized by the upright ears, band on hind quarters and tell tale whisp of forelock pointing forwards over the browband. The original animals were relatively restrained and featured the horses, cows, donkeys, pigs and chickens familiar to the local farming community. Bayol quickly became very successful and sought out by showmen despite never producing a catalogue. New premises were built around 1900 and new carvers employed. Success proved stressful for Mr Bayol and the enterprise was sold in 1909. Subsequent designs were far more exuberant and essentially Louis XV in style. Carousels were astonishingly ornate and celebrated excess. The effect was sensational though individual gallopers lost their original charm. Bayol himself set up a one man workshop in the heart of Angers. There, dressed in his wide brimmed hat, jacket and tie, clogs and sporting long hair over his Angevine moustache, he carried on carving mostly children's toys till his passing in 1931. For many years this galloper stood in the owners office of one of the many racing stables near Angers. In the 1950s a well known jockey, tired of not getting paid, loaded the galloper into his horse box in lieu of payment! It has remained with his family until now. The original paint has long worn away and the wood taken on a patina of its own. Mounted on a later display block.
