About the Item

This exquisite terracotta sculpture of a seated greyhound dates from the early 19th century and was probably made in Naples. With a height of 54 cm and a base measuring 29 x 22 cm, the work impresses with its elegant, dynamic design and extremely detailed modelling. Particularly noteworthy are the sculpturally rendered muscles, the fine facial features and the naturalistic posture of the animal, which suggest an experienced artist and a keen observation of animals. Terracotta – fired clay – was a popular material for figurative works in southern Italy, especially in Naples, at the beginning of the 19th century, particularly in the field of decorative and small-scale sculpture. The city had a long tradition of producing nativity figures (presepi) and artistic sculptures made of clay, which addressed both religious and secular themes. The use of terracotta allowed for a delicate rendering of surfaces and details, as impressively demonstrated in this dog. Neapolitan art of that period was strongly influenced by a naturalistic style, influenced by classicism, but also by folk motifs and a growing interest in the depiction of everyday life. Depictions of animals, especially dogs, played a decorative role in both courtly and bourgeois domestic culture and often symbolised loyalty and vigilance. The very good condition of this sculpture is particularly remarkable – fine details such as claws, fur texture and facial expressions are clearly visible and undamaged. The piece is not only an example of the high quality of 19th-century southern Italian terracotta work, but also a testament to the artistic standards and craftsmanship excellence that prevailed in Naples.
