20th century carved mango wood novelty dinner gong circa 1928.
Here we present a novelty dinner gong made from mango wood, which was retailed by henry howell
co ltd. Having made walking sticks since the mid 19th century, howell's looked to revive their fortunes by introducing the yz trade mark, which involved retailing novelty ash trays and pieces like this.
This piece is in the form of marmaduke who was a popular primate comic character, made from naturally shaped mango wood. Originally it would have been holding a gong in one hand and a stick in the other.
This piece first appeared in their catalogue in 1928.
