About the Item

Abraham Palatnik Large Giraffe Lucite Acrylic Sculpture Figurine - Brazil 1970s Decoration - Op Art - Sculpture Measures : 5,5cmx14cm H:31,5cm Material : Lucite Kinetic sculpture of a giraffe. Made of acrylic. Optical Art / Kinetic Art, an art movement from the 1960s and 70s. Biography: Abraham Palatnik was born in 1928 in Natal (Brazil). A Brazilian artist, he is one of the pioneers of kinetic art (Op'Art). At the age of four, he left Brazil with his family to live in Tel Aviv. There, he studied physics and mechanics at a technical school, then painting, drawing, and aesthetics at the Municipal Institute of Art in Tel Aviv. At 20, he returned to Brazil and settled in Rio de Janeiro. Initially close to artists such as Ivan Serpa, Lygia Clark, Franz Weissman, and Ferreira Gullar, with whom he formed Grupo Frente, he quickly abandoned painting to begin designing kinetic and light electrical installations. His invention was presented at the first São Paulo International Art Biennial in 1951. Some of his works are housed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo. He died of COVID-19 on May 9, 2020, in Rio de Janeiro. Elephant sold separately
