Large Hand-Carved Wooden Sculpture of a Deer Family, Belgian Congo, 1950s
An impressive African wooden sculpture, hand-carved in the Belgian Congo during the 1950s. This remarkable work depicts a family of eight deer in dynamic poses – grazing, walking, and resting – all carved from a single solid block of hardwood, most likely mahogany or teak.
The elongated and stylized bodies give the piece an almost Mid-Century modernist character, while the hand-carved details and rich patina highlight its roots in African tribal art and folk carving traditions. This combination of authenticity and elegance makes the sculpture highly decorative and collectible.
