An ammonite is an extinct marine animal belonging to the class of cephalopods. Ammonites lived in the seas of the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic eras (approximately 400 to 66 million years ago). They had a distinctive spiral shell that is often preserved as a fossil. Ammonites became extinct during the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, along with the dinosaurs.
