About the Item

A fine mid-19th Century French bronze "Chien et Tortue", depicting a hound observing a tortoise with an inquisitive look. Bronze depictions of animals in the first part of the 19th century were viewed by the French art establishment as an inapproprate subject matter and the word "Animalier" was initially derogatory. In the second part of the 19th century under the reign of the French king Louis-Philippe "bronzes animaliers" became de rigueur with large works being commissioned for public spaces and patrons collecting sought after decorative pieces. This piece is was designed by Henri Alfred Jacquemart and made in the foundry of Auguste Delafontaine in Paris between 1840 and 1885. Both signatures are present. Purchased from a high end country estate which was occupied by the same family for 200 years, the piece is in excellent condition with it's original lustrous brown patina. ( provenance: Swiss castle ) The item weighs 2412g, height 15 cm, dimensions of base 10 cm x 18cm.
