We are pleased to introduce this charming Komainu (guardian lion-dog) statue, believed to have been crafted in the late Edo period of Japan (mid-1800s). Komainu are mythical guardian creatures that have long protected Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples across Japan, serving to ward off evil spirits. They are typically found in pairs—one with its mouth open (“Agyō”) and the other closed (“Ungyō”)—symbolizing the beginning and end of all things. This particular piece stands out for its endearing appearance. Rather than aiming for realism or grandeur, it features a simple, almost humorous expression that naturally invites a smile from the viewer. Unlike the fierce and imposing figures often seen at shrine gates, this Komainu radiates a sense of warmth and familiarity, creating a gentle presence. Stone-carved Komainu come in many regional styles throughout Japan, and this small-scale, charming type is often found in the southern Kyushu region. However, the exact origin of this piece remains uncertain. It was acquired in Gunma Prefecture, suggesting it may have been carved somewhere in the Kanto area. Crafted from granite, the statue has a rustic yet solid texture that adds to its visual depth.
