About the Item
Antique Victorian Bronze Dog Shaped Top Hat Match Holder Striker Figure
Continental
Bronze
Late 19th Century
Dimensions: H x D: 12.5cm x 10cm
The charming dog-shaped figurine serves as a match holder, sometimes also referred to as a match striker.
The dog stands atop a stepped circular base cast to resemble grass. It rises on its hind legs, holding a top hat in its mouth. The large top hat is hollow, allowing matchsticks to be stored inside. Its exterior is ribbed and textured, providing a surface on which matches could be struck.
Victorian bronze match holders became popular in the 19th century as both practical household items and decorative objects. Created before the widespread use of safety matches, they were designed to hold matches and often featured a rough striking surface, replacing earlier wooden or ceramic holders. Bronze allowed for intricate designs, and many pieces were adorned with figurines, animals, floral motifs, or mythological themes, reflecting popular Victorian styles such as Gothic Revival and Rococo. These items combined utility with ornamentation, showcasing the era’s appreciation for detailed craftsmanship. Today, they are highly collectible for their artistic design, patina, and historical significance.
This delightful antique is a particularly appealing collectible for enthusiasts with a love of dogs.
