About the Item

Antoine-Louis Barye (Paris, 1795–1875) Lion Crushing a Snake Bronze with brown patina, signed “Barye”; mounted on a black marble base A powerful bronze sculpture depicting the dramatic scene of a lion crushing a snake, created by the celebrated French Romantic sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye. Cast in bronze with a rich brown patina, the work is signed “Barye” on the left side of the base and is presented on a substantial black marble plinth. Barye, renowned as one of the greatest 19th-century animaliers, devoted much of his prolific career to dynamic representations of animals and mythological subjects. His mastery of anatomical accuracy, movement, and expressive form earned him international acclaim. Several of his monumental animal sculptures—considered icons of French Romantic sculpture—stand today in the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Barye was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1868.
