About the Item

This striking Art Deco period ceramic polar bear was produced by Michael Andersen Sons in Denmark and exemplifies the sculptural modernism of the era. Rendered in richly marbled glazes of grey, white, and earthy tones, the form is stylized yet expressive, emphasizing mass, strength, and fluid movement. During the Art Deco period, the polar bear became a popular motif, symbolizing modernity, power, and fascination with the Arctic—an environment associated with exploration, progress, and the machine age. Its bold, simplified form aligned perfectly with Art Deco ideals of abstraction and streamlined design. Crafted with exceptional skill, this piece reflects Danish mastery of ceramic art. A highly collectible object, it would also work beautifully as a decorative sculpture, adding a touch of elegance and whimsy to a table top or shelf.
