About the Item

A striking earthenware rearing stallion sculpture by Michael Andersen Sons, Denmark, dating to the 1930s. Boldly modeled with strong Art Deco energy, the horse rises on its hind legs in a dynamic, sculptural pose that emphasizes movement, strength, and volume. The surface is finished in a richly expressive crackle glaze, with a luminous turquoise field webbed by fine crackling and framed by deep oxblood–aubergine accents along the mane, contours, and base. The intentional crackle pattern adds depth and texture, beautifully catching the light and highlighting the sculptural form. Resting on an integral rectangular base, the piece exemplifies Michael Andersen Sons’ mastery of form and glaze experimentation during the interwar period, when the studio produced some of its most distinctive and collectible works. A powerful decorative object and a standout example of Danish ceramic design, equally suited to a curated modern interior or a focused collection of Scandinavian pottery. Marked underneath by maker.
