About the Item
Hand-blown glass bird from Oiva Toikka’s celebrated Birds by Toikka collection for Nuutajärvi. The model Riekko - Finnish for willow grouse - was created with softly speckled beige and white glass that gives the bird its distinctive down-like surface. The head is finished in clear glass with a gentle fade into the body, showcasing Toikka’s refined layering technique and the studio’s exceptional craftsmanship.
This example dates from the 1980s, when Toikka was working closely with the Nuutajärvi glassblowers to achieve subtle tonal variations in each piece. Every Riekko bird is unique, its pattern formed organically during the blowing process, making no two exactly alike.
Displayed on a shelf, windowsill, or sideboard, it captures light beautifully - the delicate speckling shifts from creamy white to warm sand tones. A classic piece of Finnish modern glass design, ideal for collectors and those who appreciate Toikka’s imaginative yet timeless forms.
