About the Item
Beautiful robust sculpture of a Goat carved from a solid mahogany block by an Israeli artist (the signature in Hebrew letters is illegible).
The goat is standing on a solid wood block and the two rest on a rectangular Carrara marble piece (actual addition)
The sculpture is in the Cubist style as if assembled from very defined chunky and smooth volumes. It reminds the work of fellow Israeli Zeev Ben Zvi or Lithuanian-Italian Jacques Lipshitz, with a playful twist. The sculpture has a very nice finish and keeps its original dark patina appreciated mainly on the upper parts. It is in very good condition, a line or crack is noticeable on the top of the left horn, without signs of risking the integrity of the piece.
The figure of a Goat was everpresent in the folklore, art, culture, and literature of small Jewish villages in eastern Europe for many centuries and took an important part in many stories written by Yiddish-speaking writers like Scholem Aleihem, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and many others, as well as being depicted in paintings by Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky and others.
