About the Item

Iconic Italian Mid-Century Modern ceramic dove from the Rimini Blu series, designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi, finished in a richly glazed cobalt-blue surface with incised geometric detailing. A striking and highly collectible ceramic dove sculpture from the iconic Rimini Blu series, designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi in Italy during the mid-20th century. This sculptural figure exemplifies the bold surface treatment and saturated blue palette that have made Rimini Blu one of the most celebrated Italian ceramic collections of the postwar era. The dove is finished in a luminous, glossy blue glaze, animated by Londi’s signature hand-incised geometric patterning inspired by ancient Etruscan motifs. The carved surface catches the light beautifully, creating depth, rhythm, and a tactile richness that rewards close viewing. Small punctuated details and subtle glaze pooling further emphasize the handcrafted nature of the piece. Both decorative and sculptural, the figure has a strong physical presence and an unmistakable sense of design pedigree. It works effortlessly as a focal object on a bookshelf, credenza, desk, or side table, bringing color, texture, and Italian modernist character into an interior. Whether displayed alone or layered among other ceramics and art objects, it reads as confident, intentional, and timeless. Rimini Blu was introduced by Aldo Londi in the late 1950s and quickly became Bitossi’s defining series, admired for its fusion of traditional ceramic techniques with a distinctly modern aesthetic. Produced in Montelupo Fiorentino near Florence — a center of Italian ceramic production for centuries — these works remain enduring favorites among collectors and designers worldwide. This dove is a particularly fine example of Londi’s ability to distill classical symbolism into a modern form, resulting in an object that feels at once poetic, graphic, and enduring. About Bitossi Ceramiche Founded in Montelupo Fiorentino, Italy, in the early 20th century, Bitossi Ceramiche became one of the most influential names in Italian postwar design under the artistic direction of Aldo Londi. Drawing on centuries-old ceramic traditions while embracing modernist experimentation, the workshop gained international recognition for its expressive glazes, hand-incised surfaces, and sculptural forms. Londi’s Rimini Blu series, introduced in the late 1950s, remains Bitossi’s most iconic body of work and is now held in major design collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Today, vintage Bitossi pieces are highly sought after for their craftsmanship, material richness, and enduring place in the history of Italian modern design.
