A fine bronze sculpture, Crouching Rabbit by Katharine Ward Lane (Kay) Weems (1899-1989), circa 1947. A fine patinated bronze rabbit by the noted America sculptor and medalist Katharine Ward Lane Weems from a North Shore Boston private collection. The alert crouching animal is beautifully and sensitively rendered with exquisite attention to detail, a characteristic of Weems’ work. From the body type and distinctive fur treatment, this would appear to represent a Rex rabbit, otherwise known as a Velveteen rabbit. Signed © K L Weems with the artists monogram. The casting, finish and patination are exceptional. Related rabbits donated to the Museum of Fine Arts by the artist were dated by Weems to c.1947, the year she married Carrington Weems. This is a fine lifetime cast, possibly unique, in excellent condition with an undisturbed original patina. Katharine Ward Lane was born into a life of privilege in Boston, where her father was the president of the board of trustees of The Museum of Fine Arts. Katharine studied under Charles Grafly and George Demetrios at the Boston Museum School, and attended the Cape Ann summer studios of Anna Hyatt Huntington, who became her mentor and encouraged her love of animal sculpture. Like many woman artists of the period, Weems often faced hostility because of her gender. In 1926 she won two medals: a Bronze Medal at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition, and the George Widener Memorial Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Brook Green Gardens, The Pennsylvania Academy, The Baltimore Museum, and The Cape Ann Museum among others. Her most notable commission was the bronze doors, the carved brick frieze, and the two life size bronze Rhinos at the Harvard University Biological Labs.
