About the Item

The Black Rhino is one of Africa’s most formidable creatures, yet also among its most vulnerable. This bronze bust, finished in a deep blue verdigris patina, captures the raw strength and weathered dignity of the rhino’s head, its horn thrust forward like a spear forged by evolution. I first sketched this piece in the field when all I could see was a rhino’s head emerging through the thicket—an unforgettable impression of power and presence. The rhino’s horn, once its ultimate defense, has tragically become the very reason for its decline. In this sculpture, that paradox is frozen in bronze: resilience and fragility bound together. Set on a sandstone base, the piece is both a tribute and a reminder—of nature’s grandeur and mankind’s responsibility to protect it. Bronze Rhino Sculpture - Black Rhino Bust in Blue Verdigris. Limited edition of 12. Also available in Green Brown patina. I am a self-taught South African artist whose work is inspired by Africa’s wildlife, landscapes, and people. My years as a safari guide gave me an intimate connection to the bush — a place that taught me everything I know about shape, form, and movement. You can’t sculpt what you don’t feel, and every moment spent observing wildlife offers a lesson in balance, grace, and presence. I am drawn to bronze — an ancient material with a living surface that changes, deepens, and gains character over time, much like the landscapes and creatures that inspire me. Each patina adds its own mood and individuality, ensuring every piece carries its own quiet story. My work ranges from bird, wildlife, figurative, abstract to African sculpture and bespoke sculptural furniture and lighting. Each piece is entirely handcrafted — sculpted, cast, chased, and patinated by me in my own foundry using the traditional lost-wax method. Every creation reflects Africa’s beauty, strength, and spirit — enduring in material and authentic in character.
