About the Item

Solid bronze figure of a lion fighting a snake, a famous motif by A. BARYE. Engraved on the plinth “A. BARYE” (Antoine-Louis Barye, 1795–1875), one of the most important French sculptors of the 19th century, famous for his animal depictions “Animaliers.” Caster's mark: “J.B. Deposee, Bronze Garanti Paris,” dark brown patina. Standing on a round, black marble plinth. This sculpture, “Lion au serpent” or “Lion terrassant un serpent,” is one of Barye's most famous works. The original was created around 1832 and cast in bronze in various sizes. This is a high-quality recast in heavy bronze, probably from the second half of the 20th century from Paris.
