About the Item

A rare and unusual abstract Italian mid-century art pottery model of a lion from the Animali Fantastici range by renowned and influential artist Bruno Gambone (Italian, 1936-2021) and dating from around 1960. Bruno Gambone was a multi-talented artist who left school at 14 to learn the ceramic craft at his father’s workshop in Florence and was to become known as one of the most influential figures in ceramics. This rare, stylized lion figure is a wonderful example from the Animali Fantastici (Fantasy Animals) range and is very abstract in its style. The lion is portrayed lying resting with its head on its front outstretched legs with its body gathered in and looped tail resting on its hind legs. The body is hand built from sections of cut and formed clay with bold stylized decoration in orange, yellow and dark brown applied over the natural white glazed color of the underlying clay. A wonderful and stunning example of this sought after artists work and the lion is signed Gambone Italy to the base. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with aged glaze crazing and a tiny chip to the top or one ear which could be very easily restored if so desired
