About the Item

Description French Art Deco Ceramic Deer Couple by Charles Lemanceau for Saint-Clément, Le Bon Marché, 1920s. Rare and highly decorative French Art Deco ceramic sculpture representing a couple of deer, designed by Charles Lemanceau and produced by the Faïenceries de Saint-Clément for Le Bon Marché, France, during the 1920s. Executed in crackle glaze ceramic, this elegant composition exemplifies the refined stylization of animal forms that defined French Art Deco sculpture. The elongated silhouettes, balanced proportions, and subtle surface texture reflect Lemanceau’s mastery of modern decorative ceramics inspired by nature. This model is illustrated in the Saint-Clément catalog, 1925, page 1, model number 1, confirming its historical importance and early placement within the Art Deco movement. It is also documented in the authoritative reference book Craquelés, les animaux en céramique 1920–1940 by Patrick Malaureille, Massin Éditeur, Paris, 1993, page 32. The sculpture is signed “Lemanceau” on the base (see photo), ensuring authenticity. An important and collectible example of French Art Deco animalier ceramics, ideal for collectors of period design, ceramic sculpture, or works associated with Le Bon Marché. Dimensions: Width: 14 in (35.5 cm) Height: 8.9 in (22.6 cm) Depth: 3.9 in (10 cm) Condition: Very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. Craquelure glaze as intended by design. Biography — Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980) Charles Lemanceau was a renowned French ceramicist and sculptor, one of the most important designers associated with French Art Deco ceramics, particularly animal figures. Born in France in 1905, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and began collaborating in the 1920s with leading French ceramic manufacturers, most notably the Faïenceries de Saint-Clément. Lemanceau became widely recognized for his stylized animal sculptures, characterized by elegant lines, geometric simplification, and refined crackle glazes. His work perfectly embodies the Art Deco aesthetic, blending natural subjects with modernist form. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, his designs were sold through prestigious Parisian department stores, including Le Bon Marché, making his work accessible while maintaining high artistic quality. Today, Lemanceau’s ceramics are highly sought after by collectors and are well documented in major reference publications on Art Deco ceramics and animalier sculpture.
