Biography — Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980)
Charles Lemanceau was a renowned French ceramicist and sculptor, one of the most important designers associated with French Art Deco ceramics, particularly animal figures. Born in France in 1905, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and began collaborating in the 1920s with leading French ceramic manufacturers, most notably the Faïenceries de Saint-Clément.
Lemanceau became widely recognized for his stylized animal sculptures, characterized by elegant lines, geometric simplification, and refined crackle glazes. His work perfectly embodies the Art Deco aesthetic, blending natural subjects with modernist form.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, his designs were sold through prestigious Parisian department stores, including Le Bon Marché, making his work accessible while maintaining high artistic quality. Today, Lemanceau’s ceramics are highly sought after by collectors and are well documented in major reference publications on Art Deco ceramics and animalier sculpture.
