French Art Deco Elephant Sculpture by Charles Lemanceau for Saint-Clément, 1920s.
Striking French Art Deco ceramic elephant sculpture designed by Charles Lemanceau and produced by Saint-Clément (Lunéville, France) in the 1920s. This is the medium-sized version of a model available in three sizes, and is a beautifully proportioned example of Lemanceau’s iconic animal sculptures from the Art Deco era.

Charles Lemanceau (1905, Paris) was one of the most influential animal sculptors of the French Art Deco movement. A graduate and laureate of the École Estienne, École Boulle, and the École des Arts Appliqués, he quickly rose to prominence after earning the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris.
In 1923, Lemanceau joined Primavera, and by 1925 he was exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne alongside celebrated contemporaries such as Matisse, Le Corbusier, Jean Dunand, Raoul Dufy, and Fernand Léger. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, he created ceramics for Saint-Clément, Dim, and later for Maurice Dufrêne and Sainte-Radegonde.
Renowned for his dynamic and stylized ceramic animal sculptures, Lemanceau’s work is highly collectible and considered a cornerstone of Art Deco design.
This piece is a rare and elegant example of early 20th-century French decorative arts, perfect for collectors of Art Deco ceramics, animalier sculpture, or vintage French design.

Charles Lemanceau
Charles Lemanceau was born in 1905 in Paris. In 1923, he worked for Primavera. In 1925, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with his fellows Eugene Printz, Louis Sognot, Van Dongen, Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Jean Dunand, Henri Matisse, Le Corbusier, Jules Leleu, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Fernand Leger and Maurice Utrillo. In this period, he worked for Saint-Clement and DIM. From 1930, he worked for Maurice Dufrene, Primavera and Sainte-Radegonde. He was a specialist of animal sculptures, and is one of the most important sculptors in the French Art Deco period.
