This striking French Art Deco llama sculpture was created in the 1920s by celebrated sculptor Charles Lemanceau for the famed Saint-Clément (Lunéville) ceramics manufactory. About Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980)
Charles Lemanceau was one of the leading sculptors of the French Art Deco movement, celebrated for his stylized and dynamic depictions of animals. Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Lemanceau collaborated with several renowned French ceramic manufacturers—including Saint-Clément and Leune—and became a defining figure in 1920s and 1930s decorative arts.
His sculptures are distinguished by clean geometric contours, expressive posture, and a unique blend of modernism and naturalism. Lemanceau’s works—ranging from panthers and gazelles to llamas and stylized birds—are today considered essential pieces in the canon of Art Deco animalier design and remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Charles Lemanceau
Charles Lemanceau was born in 1905 in Paris. In 1923, he worked for Primavera. In 1925, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with his fellows Eugene Printz, Louis Sognot, Van Dongen, Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Jean Dunand, Henri Matisse, Le Corbusier, Jules Leleu, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Fernand Leger and Maurice Utrillo. In this period, he worked for Saint-Clement and DIM. From 1930, he worked for Maurice Dufrene, Primavera and Sainte-Radegonde. He was a specialist of animal sculptures, and is one of the most important sculptors in the French Art Deco period.
