About the Item

Couple of Bears" by Charles Lemanceau, Sainte-Radegonde, France, circa 1935. This striking and rare French Art Deco ceramic sculpture, titled "Sur la Banquise" (On the Ice Field), depicts a charming couple of bears in an elegant, minimalist style. Created by renowned artist Charles Lemanceau in the mid-1930s, this rare and highly sought-after piece showcases his mastery of ceramic craftsmanship. The sculpture is produced in a distinctive crackle glaze technique, a hallmark of Lemanceau's work and the French Art Deco period. Dimensions: Width: 24.4" (62 cm), Height: 13.6" (34.5 cm). Condition: Very good, with some minor imperfections typical of the technique used during this period. This model is illustrated in the Sainte-Radegonde catalog (see photo) and is available in two sizes. The piece presented here is the larger of the two. It is also featured in Les Craquelés Art Déco by Alain-René Hardy Bruno Giardi (page 109), as well as in Craquelés, Les Animaux en Céramique 1920-1940 by Patrick Malaureille (page 38), which is a reference book on French crackle glaze ceramics. Charles Lemanceau, born in Paris in 1905, was a prominent figure in the French Art Deco movement. A graduate of prestigious institutions such as École Estienne, École Boulle, and École des Arts Appliqués, Lemanceau went on to win the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris after his schooling. In 1923, Lemanceau began working for Primavera and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1925, alongside other Art Deco luminaries such as Eugène Printz, Louis Sognot, Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, and Le Corbusier. During this period, he collaborated with prestigious brands like Saint-Clement and Dim. From 1930 onward, he worked with Maurice Dufrêne, Primavera, and Sainte-Radegonde. Known for his exceptional animal sculptures, Charles Lemanceau remains one of the most significant sculptors of the French Art Deco era. This remarkable piece captures the essence of his unique style and artistic vision.
