About the Item
Rare Large French Art Deco Elephant Sculpture by Charles Lemanceau for Saint-Clément, France, 1920s.
A striking and rare large French Art Deco ceramic elephant designed by Charles Lemanceau for the Saint-Clément manufactory (Lunéville), produced in the 1920s. This is the largest of the three sizes made and is exceptionally scarce in the white crackle-glaze finish, making it a standout piece for collectors of Art Deco animal sculptures and French ceramics.
The sculpture displays the powerful geometric stylization characteristic of Lemanceau’s work—bold volumes, clean contours, and a dynamic sense of movement. Measuring 18.5″ (47 cm) wide, 11.8″ (30 cm) high, and 6.7″ (17 cm) deep, its impressive scale and pristine crackle glaze give it tremendous presence.
Marked “France 978 1” on the base (see photo). This model is illustrated in the Saint-Clément catalog, confirming its authenticity and period origin.
An exceptional piece in outstanding original condition — highly coveted by Art Deco collectors, especially in this large size and rare coloration.

About the Artist — Charles Lemanceau
Charles Lemanceau (1905–1980) was one of the most influential French sculptors and ceramic artists of the Art Deco period. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Lemanceau became known for his striking interpretations of animals, which blended stylized geometry with a powerful sense of movement.
He worked with several renowned French ceramic manufacturers, most notably Saint-Clément, creating some of the era’s most iconic crackle-glaze sculptures. His panthers, gazelles, bison, and elephants are celebrated for their bold volumes, architectural lines, and refined decorative appeal—perfect embodiments of the Art Deco aesthetic.
Lemanceau’s ceramics are highly collectible today, especially in larger formats and rare colorways such as white or ivory crackle glazes. His works remain enduring symbols of French Art Deco design and craftsmanship.
