About the Item

This finely cast late 19th-century French gilt-bronze sculpture, titled Coq chantant (Crowing Rooster), is the work of Émile Laporte (Paris, 1858–1907). Modeled with vitality and precision, the rooster is shown in full crow, its chest thrust forward and tail feathers dramatically arched, conveying both movement and character. The rooster, a long-established emblem of France, symbolizes vigilance, pride, and rural tradition. Laporte was a French sculptor and medalist who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, where he studied under Auguste Dumont, Louis-Thomas, and Ernest Barrias—a distinguished academic lineage reflected in the confident modeling and anatomical accuracy of this work. Laporte was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle, recognizing his accomplishments within the competitive Parisian art world of the late 19th century. The sculpture is cast in bronze with a rich gilt surface, now beautifully mellowed to a warm, nuanced patina that enhances the finely detailed plumage and muscular form. It stands on an integral naturalistic base, or terrace, which bears the artist’s signature, confirming the attribution. The work remains in excellent condition, with crisp detail and an attractive surface throughout. Dimensions: 10.75 in. high × 4.75 in. diameter

Gilded Bronze Rooster Sculpture After Arthur Comte DU PASSAGE – Allegorical
By Vicomte Du Passage
Located in BARCELONA, ES
This striking gilded bronze sculpture, after Arthur Comte DU PASSAGE (1838–1909), captures the powerful image of a proud rooster—France’s enduring national symbol—standing atop military elements and holding a flag. More than a decorative object, this piece serves as a bold allegory of resilience, victory, and national pride. The rooster, or le coq gaulois, has long represented the fighting spirit of France, particularly during the 19th century. Here, its defiant posture over weaponry and a banner evokes themes of triumph over adversity, honor in battle, and patriotic vigilance. Set atop a refined circular green marble base, the warm golden patina adds sophistication, making it a perfect acquisition for collectors of symbolic art, French historical motifs, or refined decorative bronzes. Ideal for classic interiors or as a conversation piece rich with cultural significance. Keywords: French bronze sculpture, Arthur Comte du Passage, antique rooster statue...
