About the Item

A charming and characterful ceramic dog sculpture crafted in the renowned Bizen ware tradition of Japan. Dating from the early 20th century, this expressive piece captures a crouching dog with fine details and a warm, natural ash-glazed surface typical of high-fired Bizen clay. The dog’s form is alert yet gentle, with a curled tail and expressive eyes. Its surface is unglazed, instead showcasing natural color gradations and textures resulting from the traditional wood-firing technique. This natural patina imbues the sculpture with a sense of life and age. The piece is signed and comes with its original wooden tomobako (storage box), inscribed and sealed by the artist. Dimensions: H 17 cm x W 15 cm x D 11 cm Material: Bizen clay Origin: Japan Period: Early 20th century Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No cracks or repairs. Provenance: Private Japanese collection This Bizen dog is not only a collector’s item but also a soulful presence—perfect as a symbolic guardian or an accent piece in a refined interior.
