About the Item

Fabulous 1930 Art Deco Signed Taylor Cook Whimsical Koala Doorstop #5 This original 1930 Art Deco Taylor Cook Koala Doorstop (#5) is a rare and highly collectible piece from one of the most sought-after makers of whimsical cast-iron doorstops. All of Taylor Cook’s doorstops were produced in 1930, and collectors prize them for their playful animal designs, charming personalities, and distinctive sculptural quality. Cook created a total of nine known designs, each an animal and each numbered by model, except for one dog, making the Koala (#5) an especially desirable example from the series. This enchanting cast-iron doorstop features a sweetly posed koala perched on a log, with expressive eyes, rounded ears, and the endearing character that defines Taylor Cook’s work. The piece is solid and weighty, retaining a beautiful aged patina. It is painted black, orange, and pea green with hints of yellow. Many Taylor Cook doorstops are known for their vivid neon colors. This example appears to have very old, possibly original paint, and I do not see evidence of earlier layers or repainting. It may very well have been produced in this elegant all-black finish. The doorstop is stamped "5 Taylor Cook 1930 ©". A wonderful representation of 1930s Art Deco design, this piece perfectly captures the era’s fascination with stylized animals, decorative whimsy, and sculptural home accessories. Collectors of period doorstops will recognize Taylor Cook’s work alongside other notable makers of the time such as Hubley, Bradley Hubbard, and Judd, but Cook’s limited and charming series remains uniquely scarce. This is a beautiful, rare, and character-filled Art Deco doorstop, ideal for collectors, interiors with vintage flair, or anyone who appreciates the playful elegance of early-20th-century decorative arts.
