About the Item
A Fine French Gilt Bronze Study of Two German Shepherd Dogs by Louis Riche
This impressive bronze is finely detailed. It portrays two working german shepherd dogs. The nearest is laid down and his companion is seated behind him. They both have an alert expression waiting for the command from their master. Louis Riche first exhibited at the salon in Paris in 1869 aged just 19. He specialised in numerous different animals but was best known and highly regarded for his studies of German shepherd dogs for which he was considered a master at reproducing their stance, expressions and fine detail. The majority of his work was cast at the Thiebault Freres foundry. This fine example was cast at the prestigious Paris Foundry Jollet et Cie and carries their additional medal on the reverse. This superb study retains most of its original high lustre gilt finish and is in excellent condition. Signed L Riche.

Louis Riché
Louis Riché is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Alsatian, with a large series of figures capturing the personality and gait of the canine. A prolific Animalier, Riché studied under sculptor Georges Gardet and started exhibiting at Salon 1896, where he continued to exhibit regularly, though pausing from exhibitions during both World Wars. While a large portion of his work was cast with Thiebaut Frères, he partnered with numerous major foundries of the era, including Colin et Cie, Jollet et Cie, Risler et Carré and Societe des Bronzes.
