About the Item
An exceptional Meiji period Japanese bronze sculpture by the renowned master Genryusai Seiya, signed SEIYA zo to the underside. Naturalistically cast in the form of a standing Bactrian camel, this work captures both the exotic elegance and subtle humor of the subject. The camel’s slightly squinting gilt-inlaid eyes with dark pupils convey a gently confused expression, while its two humps hang in opposite directions and its small, finely detailed genitals are visible on the underside -- details that reveal the artist’s playful touch.
The sculpture is cast in rich, darkly patinated bronze, with remarkable attention to detail evident in the textured fur, defined musculature, and precisely rendered legs and hooves. The lifelike proportions, subtle anatomical curves, and forward-leaning stance reflect Seiya’s deep observation of nature and mastery of metalwork, likely influenced by the era’s fascination with zoological subjects following the opening of the Tokyo Zoological Gardens in 1882.
Genryusai Seiya headed a celebrated workshop producing export wares of the highest quality, including human figures, vases, and exotic animal bronzes. Camel depictions from the Meiji period are notably rare, making this an extraordinary acquisition for discerning collectors of Japanese art, animalier bronzes, or 19th-century sculpture. Its commanding yet refined presence allows it to stand as a true centerpiece in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
