About the Item
A fine antique bronze of an English Bulldog by renowned artist and sculptor George Garrard ARA (British, 1760-1826).
George Garrard was born in London in 1760. He was born into a long family tradition and accomplishment in the arts dating back to the 16th century. He was a renowned English animal, landscape and portrait painter however was also renowned for his sculptures of animals. He was one of the early important lobbyists of Parliament to introduce legislation to protect the copyright of works by modelers of animals and human figures.
This delightful sculpture has been cast with an integral bronze base and portrays the bulldog, wearing a collar and lying with its head held up. The bulldog is well modelled with good strong features and well proportioned. The bronze has a raised rectangular platform base with a later applied protective cover. The collar is signed G Garrard and the bronze has a wonderful natural aged patina to the bronze finish.
Provenance: acquired in the UK Art Market.
In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
