About the Item
Georgian Carved Mahogany Eagle Ornament, in the Manner of Thomas Chippendale, Mounted on Marble Base, circa 1780–1820
A finely carved Georgian-period mahogany eagle fragment, now mounted on a later variegated marble plinth. The eagle, with wings fully spread and beak open in a spirited pose, perches atop stylized foliage, likely palm or laurel fronds. Deeply incised feather carving and a bold, sculptural silhouette convey both movement and vitality, while its talons grip the branches with authority. The underside retains its original wooden tenon, showing that it once formed part of a larger decorative ensemble.
This form of vigorous naturalistic carving is very much in the manner of Thomas Chippendale and his celebrated Director designs (1754–1762). Chippendale and his circle frequently employed eagles, phoenixes, and exotic birds in mirror crestings, overdoors, and case furniture ornament. The use of rich mahogany, combined with the dramatic Rococo-naturalistic treatment of wings and foliage, reflects the Chippendale taste as it spread through both Britain and America in the late 18th century.
The mount is a richly figured Rosso Levanto-type marble, its deep brown and burgundy tones enlivened with calcite veining and crystalline inclusions. Together, the warm patina of the mahogany and the striking stone plinth transform the fragment into a freestanding object of sculptural presence.
