About the Item

Exceptional hand-carved wooden ram's head wall mount, made in Spain for Sarreid Ltd., 1970s. Sculpted with striking detail, the head features curling horns, deeply carved fleece, and a lifelike expression, all mounted on a shaped backplate. The carving is unusually fine for Sarreid, whose Spanish workshops produced a wide range of decorative furnishings during the mid-to-late 20th century. Sarreid became known for importing hand-crafted European pieces for the American market, often drawing from traditional motifs but executing them with bold scale and rustic refinement. This ram's head represents one of the finest examples of their Spanish woodcarving - far more sculptural and naturalistic than the more common decorative objects. Originally intended as wall decoration with a nod to hunting trophies, it embodies the 1970s fascination with organic materials and artisan craftsmanship. Comparable pieces were admired by designers like Michael Taylor and later collected by dealers who valued their mix of old-world craft and modernist presence. One of the nicest carved Sarreid pieces we've handled - a rare find for collectors of the brand or anyone seeking a dramatic and authentic wall sculpture.
