About the Item

Japanese Large Hand-Carved Boxwood Okimono – “Mino-Kame” Turtle, Ca. 1900 DIMENSIONS: Height: 4 inches Length: 19 inches Wide : 5 inches ABOUT An exceptional example of Meiji-era craftsmanship, this large Okimono, carved circa 1900, is intricately hand-carved from a single block of fine boxwood. The sculpture features a “Mino-Kame” turtle — its shell resembling a traditional straw raincoat (mino), in reference to the Japanese belief that turtles live so long they grow algae on their backs. Rich in detail and character, the piece highlights the natural beauty of the wood grain and the artisan’s remarkable skill. A powerful symbol of longevity and a refined expression of traditional Japanese artistry.
