TSUNEMITSU Japan, Meiji Period (1868-1912) A Roaring Tiger Reddish-brown patinated bronze signed to the underside 常光 (Tsunemitsu) Item # 311TPX29P A brilliant example of a Roaring Tiger, this fine Meiji Period (1868-1912) okimono is executed in bronze with a vibrant surface patina comprised of an overall dark hue with maroon and ruby undertones coming through. Typical of the period, extraordinary attention was shown in the manipulation of the surface, this with a glowing high-polish juxtaposed by an etched and dimpled matte that creates the powerful chaotic striping of the tiger's fur. The chiseling and engraving throughout is of self-evident quality, showing the hand of a highly skilled metalworker in every stage of the production of the tiger. It is signed TSUNEMITSU to the belly. A popular subject matter that was created frequently during the period, the present example is of a fantastic size with a profile of nearly 21" in total width and showcases a fine translucent surface. Freed from a base and entirely untethered, the ferocious cat strolls the bookshelves and tabletops with a posture and form both sleek and truly intense. A powerful statement piece.
