ABOUT RABBIT FIGURINE
A charming and finely crafted Kutani porcelain figurine of a rabbit, dating to the transitional period between the late Meiji (1868–1912) and early Taishō (1912–1926) eras, circa 1920. This expressive sculpture captures the gentle character of the animal with elegant modeling and subtle detailing. The rabbit’s body is rendered in soft contours with delicately painted features that reflect the high level of craftsmanship associated with Kutani ware.
The piece is signed on the underside, indicating its workshop origin and attesting to its authenticity.
ABOUT KUTANI PORCELAIN
Kutani porcelain (Kutani-yaki) is one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions, originating in the 17th century in the Kaga Province (modern-day Ishikawa Prefecture). Renowned for its vibrant overglaze enamel decoration, Kutani ware is often distinguished by its bold use of colors such as green, blue, yellow, purple, and red—commonly referred to as the “Kutani palette.”
During the Meiji and Taishō periods, Kutani porcelain experienced a renaissance, with artists producing both traditional motifs and more naturalistic and expressive forms like this rabbit. Works from this era often featured finely painted figures, animals, and scenes from daily life, and were widely exported to the West. This figurine exemplifies the refined aesthetic and technical excellence of late-period Kutani porcelain, blending naturalistic modeling with Japan’s enduring ceramic artistry.
