The Sea Bull (Havtyren in Danish). Ceramic rock. Height : 25.8"(65.5cm), Width : 24.2"(61.5cm), Depth : 9"(23cm). Weight : 21.4 kgs. Bing Grøndhal stamp and JR Gauguin signature below (see photo). This sculpture is reproduced in "Mobilier et Decoration" from January 1928. Jean René Gauguin, born in Paris in 1881, is the son of the French painter Paul Gauguin and his Danish wife Mette Sophie Gad. He started sculpture in 1910 and began producing ceramics in Austria in 1921. In 1923, the large Bing Grondahl factory in Copenhagen hired him, where he produced most of his work and invented a new material called ceramic rock. He exhibited many ceramics at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris and was invited to work for the Manufacture de Sèvres for a few months in 1926. His very colorful work is inspired by Baroque sculpture. His works are featured in very large private and public collections around the world.
