About the Item

The Blue Fish is a wall-mounted relief designed by Jeanne Grut around 1962 and produced by Royal Copenhagen (Aluminia). The relief is modelled in faience with a pronounced three-dimensional character and finished with a deep blue glaze in varying tones, accentuating the fish’s scales, fins, and distinctive body form. The motif is inspired by the so-called coelacanth—a type of fish dating back to the Devonian period approximately 320 million years ago. For many years, the coelacanth was believed to be extinct until a specimen was caught off the coast of South Africa in 1938. This discovery attracted widespread international attention, as the fish was regarded as a “living fossil,” virtually unchanged over millions of years. Jeanne Grut’s interpretation is based on the fish’s distinctive and primordial form, lending the motif an almost mythical quality. The powerful modelling combined with the intense blue glaze gives the relief a calm yet monumental presence, characteristic of Danish arts and crafts from the early 1960s. The work reflects a period in which scientific discoveries and a fascination with natural forms frequently influenced art and design. Literature: Leif Lautrup-Larsen, Stoneware – The Royal Porcelain Factory, Nyt Nordisk Forlag Arnold Busck, 2007, p. 260. About the Artist Jeanne Grut (1927–2006) was a Danish sculptor and ceramic artist who, in 1958, became permanently affiliated with Royal Copenhagen. During her time there, she produced a number of ceramic reliefs and smaller sculptural works, particularly animal motifs based on studies from nature. Her work is characterised by a confident handling of form and volume, combined with a deliberate and restrained use of glazes. The Blue Fish is regarded as Jeanne Grut’s largest and most significant ceramic work. In 1971, an example was produced as an official gift to the Japanese Emperor on the occasion of a visit to the Royal Porcelain Factory, underscoring the work’s status and importance. Today, her works from the 1950s and 1960s are considered highly sought-after collectibles within Danish ceramics.
