About the Item
“La Chasse Au Lion”, “The Lion Hunt”, A Monumental French Orientalist Bronze Sculpture after Aime Millet (1818–1891), circa late 19th century.
This bronze sculpture of The Lion Hunt is magnificent and palatial in size. The quality of the casting is very crisp and the original patination is in excellent condition. It depicts the typical Lion Hunt which is a series of oil on canvas paintings produced by the French artist Eugène Delacroix in the mid-1800s. Delacroix often painted hunting scenes and animals fighting. Like many other artists of the romantic era, he was fascinated by oriental and exotic locales.
The Lion Hunt is also a 1621 painting by Peter Paul Rubens, now held in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. It shows two lions attacked by hunters on horseback and on foot. It marks the end of an intensive creative phase for Rubens centered on the theme of hunting.
Aimé Millet was born in Paris, son of the miniaturist F. Millet. He was a pupil of David d’Angers and Viollet le Duc. Exhibiting for the first time at the Salon in 1840, he went on to win a first class medal in 1857 and to become a Chavalier de la Legion d’Honneur in 1859. The present evocative group encapsulates Millet’s skill for monumental groups, in an orientalist style very much en vogue at the time.
