About the Item

Large 19th-Century Staffordshire Pottery Spaniels, 14.75" High, Exceptional Scale Expression A striking and unusually large pair of Victorian Staffordshire pottery spaniels, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. Standing an impressive 14.75 inches high and measuring 11 inches wide, these monumental examples are far larger than standard mantel dogs and present exceptional visual presence. Each spaniel is richly modeled with flowing fur, deeply grooved tail forms, and expressive faces featuring hand-painted amber eyes, bold eyebrows, and black snouts with red-lined mouths. They wear the traditional gilt chain and padlock collars, now softly worn with age. The bodies display characteristic glaze speckling, small kiln imperfections, and iron-oxide touches, all reinforcing true period manufacture. The bases show classic Staffordshire traits: an oval open underside with a single vent hole, an unglazed foot rim, glaze pooling, and firing grit. These features, combined with weight and molding depth, confirm authentic Victorian production rather than later reproductions. Powerful in scale and charm, this pair makes a dramatic statement on mantels, consoles, and sideboards. Large Staffordshire dogs are increasingly scarce, especially in matched pairs with strong character and presence. Dimensions: 14.75" H × 11" W × 5" D; base footprint 8.75" × 5".
