Large Elephant by Vicke Lindstrand for Upsala-Ekeby, Sweden, 1940s
Elegant and expressive ceramic elephant designed by Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) for the Swedish ceramics company Upsala-Ekeby during the 1940s. Lindstrand served as the artistic director of the company during this period, and this piece exemplifies his characteristic blend of stylized form and natural movement.
Crafted in matte white-glazed earthenware, the elephant is sculpted with a softly rounded body, pronounced ears, and a distinctively curved, upward trunk – a classic symbol of good luck. The detailing reflects Lindstrand’s keen eye for both artistic expression and minimalistic refinement.
