About the Item

A rare, large and very dramatic porcelain sculpture of a monkey made by Ernst Bohne Sohne in Rudolstadt in Volkstedt, Thuringia, Germany, c. 1880. The monkey is smiling with great energy and character as he holds a corn cob in each hand. He sits on top of a tree stump sprouting with green fronds, with his tail wrapped around it. Note the beautiful detail of his feet grasping around parts of the stump as well as the lush texturing to his fur. His eyes are bright and he has superb presence. The polychrome sculpture is stamped ‘EBS 2479/2’ to the base. EBS stands for Ernst Bohne Sohne, and this particular mark was used from 1878 onwards. Ernst Bohne was from Cumbach and founded a porcelain painting business in 1848. The Ernst Bohne Söhne Rudolstadt porcelain factory emerged from this porcelain decorating studio. In 1850 a kiln was built but the porcelain factory is thought to be founded in 1854. Ernst Bohne died in 1856. In the 1870s and 1880s, the Ernst Bohne Söhne's porcelain was recognised with several awards, and specialised in ‘articles de luxe et de fantasie’ (luxury and fantasy items). Ernst Bohne Söhne had trade representatives in Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Paris, and London. This is a rare and rather special sculpture that has just come out of a private collection where it has been held for many decades. There is an old repair to one leaf, not intended to be invisible. Otherwise it is in superb original condition.
