A scarce, large and impressive porcelain sculpture of an owl almost certainly made by Ernst Bohne
Sohne in Rudolstadt in Volkstedt, Thuringia, Germany, c. 1880.
The sculpture depicts a Great Horned Owl perched on a tree stump. The detail and quality of the modelling is exquisite. The owl has bright eyes and rich colouring to the feathers.
The polychrome sculpture bears a faint stamp ‘2518’ to the base. This is almost certainly a stamp for the renowned ceramic firm of Ernst Bohne
Sohne. Ernst Bohne was from Cumbach and founded a porcelain painting business in 1848. The Ernst Bohne Söhne Rudolstadt porcelain factory emerged from this porcelain decorating studio. In 1850 a kiln was built but the porcelain factory is thought to be founded in 1854. Ernst Bohne died in 1856. In the 1870s and 1880s, the Ernst Bohne Söhne's porcelain was recognised with several awards, and specialised in ‘articles de luxe et de fantasie’ (luxury and fantasy items). Ernst Bohne Söhne had trade representatives in Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Paris, and London.
This is a rare and very special sculpture that has just emerged from a private collection where it has been held for many decades. Condition is fantastic with no damage.

With pointed ears, a charming face and a fantastic aged surface, it is the perfect addition to any garden, although it could equally be used indoors. The beautiful red patina gives a dramatic russet glow to the candlelight within, which then shines through the perforated form of the owl to very atmospheric effect.
