A magnificent rustic Spanish Colonial 18th century wooden bowl adorned with mid-20th century silver plated mounts in the form of a squirrel, made in Spain.
This is a wonderfully whimsical and entertaining bowl that would be a standout addition to any table, and is sure to be a conversation piece. Perfect for nuts! The bowl is an original antique hand carved and turned 18th century bowl that was adapted in the 1950s with the addition of silver plated ribbon banding and mounts in the shape of a squirrel. The squirrel is holding a pine cone in both hands, with a bushy tail on the other side of the bowl.
The hand carved bowl has superb age and patina. There are old turned grooves cut into its outer circumference that have extraordinary character. You can really feel the history of the item in the multiple dents, marks, and old repairs it has accumulated over the centuries. The ribbon banding is a very decorative traditional method used to reinforce the wood and hide old repairs.
The squirrel also has great presence and charm, beautifully modelled and with the bright alertness characteristic of squirrels. The plating of the squirrel is in excellent condition, and the silver sparkles against the rich patina and grain of the wood. It is a very beautiful and ingenious way of salvaging an antique everyday item.
The result is a very distinctive serving bowl, fruit bowl, nut bowl or decorative bowl that oozes history. A magnificent rustic addition to any kitchen, living room, countryside, mountain house, or hunting lodge.
