About the Item

Captivating late 19th-century bronze sculpture crafted by the skilled hands of Clovis Edmond Masson (1838-1917), depicting a charming scene of a dog engaged in playful interaction with a turtle, signed C. Masson. Born and bred in Paris, Masson honed his craft under the tutelage of distinguished mentors such as Barye, Rouillard, and Santiago, showcasing his prowess in animalier sculpture at the Salon from 1867 to 1909. Notable among his early exhibits was the 1867 'Indian Tiger Hunt' in plaster, marking the onset of a prolific career. Infused with a playful and inventive spirit, Masson's work bears the unmistakable influence of Barye, characterized by a delightful sense of freedom. While the quality of casts may vary, they often exhibit a commendable standard. Masson's repertoire comprises over fifty-two Salon exhibits, predominantly featuring the feline genus, such as the 1881 'African Leopard defending its Prey,' as well as depictions of deer, exemplified by the 1883 'Fighting Stags,' and equine subjects, including a piece possibly inspired by Barye's 'Cheval Turc.'

Paul-Édouard Delabrièrre (French, 1829–1912), Bronze of Two Hounds, 19th Century An impressive 19th-century French bronze sculpture depicting two hounds, finely modeled with exceptional naturalism and detail, signed E. Delabrièrre. The dogs are shown in dynamic contrast: one with its head raised in alert attention, the other sniffing the ground, perfectly capturing the instinctive behavior and vitality of hunting dogs. The sculpture rests on an integral bronze base with a rich green patina and traces of gilt highlights, enhancing its surface depth and visual interest. Paul-Édouard Delabrièrre (1829–1912) was a prominent French animalier sculptor, part of the celebrated 19th-century movement that included Barye, Cain, and Fremiet. Initially trained as a painter, Delabrièrre turned to sculpture in 1848, debuting at the Paris Salon in 1857. He quickly gained recognition for his energetic and lifelike portrayals of animals, particularly hunting dogs, horses, lions, and exotic wildlife. His works are noted for their anatomical accuracy, spirited compositions, and ability to capture both strength and subtle expression. Today, Delabrièrre’s bronzes...
