About the Item

Maurice PROST (1894 - 1967) "Panthère au repos" Bronze Sculpture with a nuanced brown patina Resting on a rectangular black marble base Signed M. Prost and sculptor’stamp with 2 cobras, numbered 2. Old edition font. Only three specimens known in this dimension Maurice Gaston Elie Joseph Prost (1894-1967) studied with the sculptor Léopold Morice. But it was Charles Valton who revealed his vocation as an animal artist. In 1913, Prost be-gan an apprenticeship in the workshop of Gauthier, a Parisian goldsmith. However, his training as a goldsmith came to an abrupt end after the outbreak of the First World War. Prost pledges and is sent to the front of Argonne. During the first months of the war, he was seriously injured and transferred to a military hospital where his left arm was amputated due to gangrene. Newly disabled, he cannot continue the goldsmith’s trade. Prost was determined to pursue an artistic career and embarked on sculpture. After a stay in Montpellier, he returned to Paris in 1918. He then goes daily to the Jardin des Plantes to draw and model animals. There he meets other animal sculptors with whom he makes sin-cere friendships. First modeling his subjects in clay, he goes from 1922 to direct pruning with the help of his wife. In 1927, the proximity of a glass workshop gave him the idea of using an air-powered ma-chine to operate a pneumatic hammer, which he adapted and developed with the help of the Apparatus Services of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Now, he will be able to practice direct pruning without any help. Prost has exhibited since 1921 at the Salon des Artistes Français where he continues to pre-sent his work as well as at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. He also regularly presents works at the Salon d'Automne until 1966, the year before his death. In 1922, at the Salon des Artistes Français, he received a medal of honor and after that, his career really took off. Maurice Prost permanently exhibits at the Galerie Susse in Paris until after the Second World War. His works were among the best-selling of this gallery. He exhibited in 1928 at the first Salon des Artistes Mutilés et Blessés de Guerre on the Champs-Elysées, an event whose inauguration brought together the entire French political class and the international press. Prost presents his Black Panther at the 1931 Colonial Exhibition. He subsequently created many monumental sculptures for cities and institutions. He became an ordinary professor of drawing at the Chamber of Commerce in Paris, where he taught for 22 years. Knight of the Légion d'honneur in 1933, he was promoted to Officer of the Légion d'honneur des Arts in 1957.
